Bernie Sanders & More Male Senators Are Reading Coretta Scott King’s Letter To Support Elizabeth Warren And They AREN’T Being Silenced!
Elizabeth Warren‘s words will be finished even if she’s not the one saying them.
On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Senator was formally silenced by Republican Senators for rejecting Jeff Sessions‘ attorney general nomination by reading a letter from Coretta Scott King.
Warren’s reading of the 1986 letter, in which King objected to Sen. Sessions’ nomination to be a federal judge, was cut short by GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — who later banned Warren from the floor for the remainder of the debate.
But even though Warren was silenced, her words found a way right back to the senate floor!
Later in the night, Sen. Jeff Merkley supported his colleague by finishing what she started and elaborated on the context of King’s letter — and specifically quoted the section McConnell objected to.
Unlike Warren, however, the Oregon Senator spoke without an interruption from McConnell.
None of these men were forced to cede their floor time by Rule XIX — which McConnell enforced to silence Warren.
While it’s most likely because the GOP Senate was trying to keep a bad situation from getting worse, it certainly leaves a yucky, misogynistic taste in our mouths!
Nevertheless, we’re glad that Warren’s Democratic colleagues have her back — and have proved that truly powerful words cannot be silenced.
We just hope Liz gets to finish her own words next time.
